La Macarena

JUNGLES AND PLAINS SACRED REFUGE OF COLORS, HISTORY AND CONSERVATION

La Macarena emerges with its red sunsets nuanced in extensive savannahs. They witness the work and cultural expressions of the fields, the sound of songs, today included in the World Heritage List, and a cappella melodies that narrate llanero’s tasks and the relationship of the community with nature. The mountains embelish the Sierra de la Macarena, which converges the Amazon and Orinoquia, and ratify its value and natural wealth. It is known as one of the places with the greatest biodiversity in the world and its rivers of unique beauty, with rock formations and giant kettles such as the Guayabero River and Caño Cristales. The last is known as "the river that escaped from Paradise", or the river where the rainbow drowned in its transparent waters as the semi-aquatic plants the “Macarenia Clavigera” dress it and make it the most beautiful river in the world. But that is not all! This iconic place is in one of the oldest sites in the world, containing its origins and the history of the first living beings, ratifying that Colombia is a country of dream and charm. Therefore, visiting this place of exceptional value, whether it’s for investigation, enjoyment, traveling its roads and trails, swimming and sailing its rivers or learning about the Llanera culture, is a must on the list of travelers interested on authentic and new experiences.

THE ESSENTIALS IN THE MACARENA:

  1. Raudal de Angosturas: Bordering the Tinigua Natural Park and the Sierra de La Macarena, the Raudal de Angostura allows you to enjoy sailing the Guayabero River, be amazed by the enigmatic rock engravings, ecological walks, bird watching, and enjoy other activities, that reveal the beautiful magic hidden in its abundant historical and natural heritage.
  2. The Laguna del Silencio:Measuring 15 hectares, the Laguna del Silencio was named among natives and settlers, alluding the peace and tranquility that inspires its visitors. The main activities are sighting of flora and fauna such as turtles, birds like herons, corocoras, hummingbirds, herpets, reptiles and others, nature photography activity and hiking around the lagoon.
  3. Guayabero River: Making its way between the departments of Meta, Vichada and Guaviare, bordering the urban area of La Macarena, the Guayabero River is the guide that takes you to areas like Caño Cristales and, together with the Ariari River, they form the Guaviare River. It owes its name to the native people of the territory, the indigenous Guayaberos, and its route lends itself perfectly to sport fishing for payaras, catfish and yellowtails.
  4. Caño Cristales: It is mandatory to witness this natural phenomenon also known as the River of Five Colors: a true world treasure. When you visit Meta, its crystalline waters reveal yellow, blue, green, red and black as a result of contact between the sun's rays and Macarenia clavigera, an endemic aquatic plant.
